The Battle of Carthage State Historic Site commemorates the spot of the July 5, 1861 conflict, one of the first Civil War battles to be fought. Largely an open space of 7.4 acres, a large informational billboard gives visitors in-depth information on the battle, its importance in the war and general information about the Civil War itself. Located outside of Carthage, the site is about 17 miles northeast of Joplin.
